The Advantages of Buying an Outboard Motor for Your Boat

Jeffrey Gregory

Looking for an engine to purchase for your small boat?

With the availability of marine engines, boat travel has become quicker and a lot easier than it used to be. You no longer need to use muscle or wind to power your boat — all you need to do is to start your engine and steer the boat wherever you want to go.

All boat engines can be classified into two main categories — inboard and outboard motors. Each engine type has unique features, pros, and cons that should be carefully looked into before making a final purchase decision.

If you're contemplating buying an outboard motor for your boat, read on to discover the advantages it can bring.

Outboard motors are great for sailing in shallow water.

Most small boats are designed to be used for shallow-water cruising. If you choose an engine type that has a deep draught, you may not be able to explore every part of the water. Plus, you may have an unpleasant boating experience of stepping into the water to push your vessel every time it gets stuck in the shallow water.

Outboard engines offer smaller draughts to suit your shallow water needs while ensuring a safe and comfortable boat ride, even in chop.

Outboard motors provide the most usable space inside the boat.

Because an outboard engine is designed to be mounted onto the outside of a boat, it helps maximise usable space in the interior of the boat. It makes for a great option if you're interested in having more room to move around easily and maximise boat-riding comfort.

Outboard motors are less expensive to maintain.

If you're concerned about the cost of maintaining your boat engine, then an outboard engine is an obvious choice.

Since this type of engine is affixed to the outside of your boat, it is generally easier to access for maintenance purposes. Your boat mechanic doesn't need to lift the boat to access its engine as they would need to do when working on an inboard engine.

Consequently, they can maintain your engine quickly and with a minimal hassle, thus charging you less for boat maintenance service.

Outboard motors deliver great advantages but they aren't suited to all boating situations. If you intend to cruise in deep water, you might be better off investing in an inboard boat engine to increase your boat draught. Talk to a boat engine expert nearest to you about your boating needs and they'll help you make an informed purchase decision.
